Award

Surveying, Measuring and Setting Out is a HN Flex module from the Construction Management Higher National programme.

This course explores the techniques used to set up controls and conduct initial surveys, including communication of results and methods of setting out the built environment. You will get to use tools and techniques used within the industry and develop a wider knowledge of how and why they are used.

This unit will be one session per week over 15 weeks. The study method will combine online delivery with onsite delivery for practical activities.

Course Content
  • The methods and technologies used in surveying for construction
  • Undertake a closed levelling and stages of a closed 2D traverse survey to establish station coordinates for horizontal and vertical control
  • Apply industry-standard techniques in the collection of survey data and setting out the coordinates of construction elements
  • The causes of errors and techniques to improve accuracy in surveying and setting out
Placements and Work Experience

This unit will focus on skills around cyber security to help inform your practice within a variety of job roles.

By investigating cyber security threats and attacks, the knowledge gained throughout this unit will support cyber security strategies to be considered for a variety of organisations in different sectors.

Assessment methods

There will be one assessment for this unit, broken into sections and completed throughout the course. You will have an opportunity for formal feedback before your final submission.

HN assessments are graded at Pass, Merit and Distinction and you will provide with specific criteria that you must achieve within a given assessment.

Industry standard computer labs with screens, PCs and specific construction related tools and software that will support the development of skills for onsite activities such as Total Workstations.
