Nasma Bibi, Case Study

Nasma joined University Campus Oldham as studying locally meant she could follow her passions while honouring childcare commitments and managing her personal life.

Along the way, she says the course has helped her to “become a better person”.

Being “passionate about the mind and body, how the brain functions and how it has an impact on people’s behaviour,” Nasma found the BSc (Hons) Psychology course to be a “brilliant” choice.

“I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge about the brain and how memory, perception and decision-making can play a huge role in someone’s behaviour and actions. I can analyse results from qualitative and quantitative data, and have also gained a clear understanding of fundamental theories,” she says.

Not only did the course give Nasma the technical understanding of the subject, but she developed many soft skills to take into her future career.

“Some of the skills I have gained at UCO include critical thinking, active listening, resilience, time management, adaptability and emotional awareness.

“By listening to what people are saying, how they are communicating and noticing their body language, I now better understand people – particularly the patients I deal with in my current role.

“My behaviour has changed in a positive way: I have developed a lot more patience and understanding, and an urge to help others so they feel they have been heard.”

One of Nasma’s course highlights was completing her dissertation and clinical assignment. She says:

“I thoroughly enjoyed working on them, and don’t think I could have done it without my tutors pushing me through it and having faith in me.”

This support was something Nasma felt from all staff members at UCO: “I can hand on heart say they are amazing.”

After graduating, Nasma will continue in her current role to further help people make a better life for themselves, and would like to remain doing so – as well as potentially returning to education in the future.

“I would recommend UCO as a place of study: the staff are amazing, the courses are brilliant and they help you to become a better person.”
