Overview

The Digital and Creative Industries have been identified as a key growth sector for the national economy by the UK Government, specifically within the North West with the Northern Powerhouse Initiative. Our employer and industry contacts span locally, regionally and internationally, with students engaging in audio and video projects spanning from local radio to working with Hollywood movie production companies.

With a focus on content production, underpinned by theoretical and research based modules, the Media Production course gives a solid foundation within the creative industries.

Group Media Practice Project
Focusing on the knowledge and skillsets required to work successfully within a team-based environment, this module provides the framework for the resolution of critical and practical issues when producing a project to client specifications. Through group briefings and production meetings, the final product will produced and then presented to an audience.

Portfolio Projects
With a focus on the individual subject-specific skillset of the learner, this module accommodates the generation of a body of professional level work, which will promote a self-critical and self-accountable approach to working methods. An individual portfolio will track the learner’s ability to function as critical and proficient practitioner within their respective fields.

Advanced Post Production
Analysing and evaluating current post production technologies and techniques, the use of advanced image and audio control will form the basis of an individual project in which compositing, lighting, colour and broadcast specifications will all be a part of the production pipeline.

Work as Practice
This module allows the production of work relating to a chosen discipline through negotiation with the tutor. Enhancing the knowledge and experience within the chosen area, work will be undertaken with a client in the appropriate field. Engaging with an active client base increases and enhances employment opportunities, industry contacts and skills relevant to the current work place.

UCO has strong links worldwide within the creative industries.

Students engage with industry professionals via video skype sessions and also Q&A sessions within the classroom. Previous talks have included Robert Chapin (Star Wars, X-Men) and local production company Cosmic Joke.

Audio experience includes podcasting and radio, where UCO alumni have been given their own radio show for broadcast worldwide.

Residential trips allow the student to experience first hand what it is like within the working environment of a video production company.

All aspects of pre-production, production and post-production within the audio and video industries, including cameraman, editor, sound assistant and director. The student will also have acquired the skills necessary to begin a freelance career in either filmmaking or audio production.

A variety of practical based assessment designed to equip you for the industry will be used throughout the course. These will include a personal and professional development portfolio, record logs, presentations and pitches to "clients", short essays/written records, group and individual projects, and a variety of product creation and production. The formal assessments are designed to provide valid opportunities to engage with practical industry standard and related production projects that will help to develop a wide range of knowledge, skills and understanding in preparation for work in the sector.
