Overview

The Digital and Creative Industries have been identified as a key growth sector for the national economy by the UK Government. The current number of graduates in this sector is low compared to the skills demand. The Foundation Degree in Creative Media Production is readily accessible to the resources and developments inspired and engendered by Media City and the digital creative arts environment. The reach, currency and aspiration of this course is worldwide.

Our employer contacts span locally, regionally and internationally. For example, some of our students participated in a Skype session with a Hollywood producer, and went on to film a scene included in a Hollywood movie released worldwide on DVD

Oldham is a great place to study creative media – the establishment of Media City at Salford Quays, excellent transport links and the building of the UKs first Digital Career College in Oldham has energised the sector locally. In addition, our employer contacts span locally, regionally and internationally. For example, some of our students participated in a Skype session with a Hollywood producer. The students then went on to film a scene which was included in a hollywood movie which was released theatrically on DVD & Blu-Ray woldwide. For example our students participated in Skype video sessions with Hollywood producers, actors and special effects artists.

This course is offered as a two year full time programme and will give you the expertise, experience and confidence to succeed in the industry.

Creative Audio Production 1
This module provides an introduction to industry standard equipment and software employed within the creative audio production sector and will give you the opportunity to experiment with a variety of audio production techniques.

You will be introduced to professional production workflow and audio editing techniques, with an emphasis on creating original and experimental pieces of work. You will be encouraged to employ creative design decisions within your workflow and to engage with industry professionals through location visits and in-house talks. Workshop practice forms the core of this module, together with seminars and lectures that will provide underpinning context and application. Lectures will cover the technical aspects of the module, while practical and workshop sessions and project assignments will provide the scope to apply the techniques covered.

Creative Audio Production 2
This module builds on the skills you will acquire in Creative Audio Production 1. You will consider audio for a range of platforms and uses: radio, music, video, podcast, advertisement and information. You will be introduced to advanced audio production workflow and audio editing techniques, with an emphasis on layering sound and the use of audio effects to create a piece of work that is both immersive and experimental.

Creative Visual Production 1
This module provides an introduction to the industry standard equipment and software employed within the sector of creative visual production.

You will be introduced to professional production workflow, shot composition, editing techniques and both interior and exterior filming with emphasis on creating a project to professional standards. You will be encouraged to engage with industry professionals through location visits and Skype video question and answer sessions.

Creative Visual Production 2
This module builds on the skills acquired in Creative Visual Production 1.

You will be introduced to advanced professional filming techniques, lighting, green screen and storyboards. Using a range of creative design decisions you will create a 3-5 minute video that will be of a standard to be entered into national and international film festivals. The completed film will form the basis of your ongoing professional show reel.

The module sessions will take place weekly and will involve lectures, workshops, peer discussions and industry practitioner visits and Q&A sessions.

Visual Communication for Media
This module will introduce you to the basics of visual communication theory and practice, and will enable you to interpret and record the visual world. It aims to develop your appreciation of the principles that underpin visual language and will help you create visually exciting, innovative and effective media outcomes. You will use experimental techniques to develop key principles which you will apply to create a range of exciting visual images. From this you will be encouraged to develop your own visual language and identity, and apply your increased understanding and awareness towards the production of your portfolio.

Media Institutions Enterprise
This Module is intended to introduce you to the various sectors within the creative industries whilst examining and reflecting on where they sit within the current media landscape.

You will be supported in identifying potential job opportunities across all sectors and construct an ongoing professional development portfolio to enhance employability skills.

The module will take place weekly across one semester and will involve lectures, presentations, industry visits and peer discussions.

Media Codes and Conventions
In this module you will use a combination of lectures, seminars and discussions to explore theories around the relationship between the media industries and contemporary culture including the ever expanding portfolio of social media outlets.

Through the use of case studies, you will develop a greater understanding of how media reflects and influences society and have the opportunity to discuss and critique both behaviour and implications.

You will also investigate the regulatory constraints that govern the industry and explore the effects of regulation on content creation.

Editing Music
This module builds upon the skills you acquired in the creative audio and visual production workshops in year one. The music industry is an important part of the creative industries and you will be tasked with creating either an audio only or audio/visual project that incorporates copyright free music as its focal point. This could include the production of a music video, an audio promotional piece for a band or a radio play/ podcast. You will be encouraged to obtain your copyright free music by engaging in professional discussion with bands and solo artists worldwide.

Constructing Narrative
This module builds upon the skills you acquire in the creative audio and visual production workshops in year 1. You will have the opportunity to produce either an audio or video based project which adheres to a narrative that will be negotiated with the tutor. You will employ creative design ideas in the planning and construction of the project, which can also include multi-media companies.

Sector Based Production Project
This module gives you the opportunity to carry out an extended sector led media based project. It is a combination of the audio, visual and project work carried out across the programme. The work is set by industry professionals to industry standard deadlines and standards.

The module will be based on an externally devised brief with an identified outcome negotiated with you, the external sector organisation and your tutor.

The module represents the culmination of the skills developed whilst on the course and will reflect your own particular interest and career direction. This will involve keeping rigorous project management records whilst negotiating with the client to deliver the brief within deadlines and to the required industry standards.

Visual Effects and Imagery
This module focuses on the production of a portfolio of experimental and creative visual effects for moving image using a range of software packages and in camera techniques. You will produce sequences that can be integrated into current and future projects whilst also enhancing your practical skills. You will also have the opportunity for cross discipline engagement across the digital and creative industries courses to encourage and incorporate a variety of media within the completed projects.

​Learning and Teaching
​ This is a practical course that will give you an in depth knowledge of working and using different platforms in the media sector, but also develop your research and writing skills. Using industry standard equipment you will be encouraged to create media products using appropriate techniques and technology. You will also apply creative ideas in visual and audio production, and design and present material to appropriate audiences. You will learn how to develop an experimental and creative approach to the construction of a curated portfolio by developing your personal portfolio throughout the course

​Assessment
​ A variety of practical based assessment designed to equip you for the industry will be used throughout the course. These will include a personal and professional development portfolio, record logs, presentations and pitches to "clients", short essays/written records, group and individual projects, and a variety of product creation and production. The formal assessments are designed to provide valid opportunities to engage with practical industry standard and related production projects that will help to develop a wide range of knowledge, skills and understanding in preparation for work in the sector.

Breaking into the media industry can be tough and it is strongly advised to do some work experience during your course. Building your network and making links with employers is crucial. The course at University Campus Oldham offers hands on practical experience and engagement with employers.

After successful completion of the foundation degree many students go on to complete the one year top up degree and achieve a full honours degree. However, there are also a number of career pathways which you may want to consider including the following roles:
