Entry Requirements

UCO welcomes applications from adult learners who may not have all the qualifications listed but have the right experience at an appropriate level. We assess each application individually and pay particular attention to the requirements imposed by professional bodies as well as evidence of your ability to study at a Higher Education level. An interview can be arranged to help you explore how you might undertake a course of Higher Education. Please contact the UCO Admissions Team for further details on: 0161 344 8800.

General Entry Requirements
We accept qualifications such as A and AS levels, BTEC QCF, BTEC NQF/OCR Nationals and Higher Nationals, International/European/Welsh Baccalaureate, Scottish Highers, Irish Leaving certificates, Access to HE Diploma, NVQ Level 3 (alongside other recognised level 3 qualifications), Advanced Diploma and Open University credits. Further and more detailed entry requirements for full-time degree programmes are accessible via the UCAS course search facility at www.ucas.com, or on the UCO Website.

Applicants to UCO degree programmes would normally be expected to have a minimum of two A Levels, or equivalent qualifications, plus passes in five other subjects at GCSE (or equivalent).

For Degree Courses
Most requirements will be expressed in terms of UCAS Tariff Points, although some courses require grades in specific subjects and additional criteria may also be required. No offers will be made solely on the basis of AS or equivalent awards. NVQ Level 3 or NVQ (QCF) qualifications are not normally acceptable on their own, but will be considered alongside other recognised Level 3 Qualifications.

GCSE Requirements
Applicants are normally expected to offer a range of five GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent Level 2 qualifications) in different subjects. GCSE English Language at grade C or above is normally required, although in some circumstances other subjects may be accepted in lieu of this. Some courses have other specific requirements at GCSE, and these are detailed on the relevant course pages.

Other Qualifications
We recognise that our students come from a variety of backgrounds and we try to reflect this in our admissions criteria. The qualifications listed satisfy the general entry requirements; however, the list is not exhaustive. Please do not hesitate to contact our Admissions Team on 0161 368 8596 if you require further clarification or you have qualifications which are not listed.

BTEC National Qualifications
We welcome applicants with BTEC National (NQF) and (QCF) qualifications. If you are studying for, or hold, a BTEC National qualification, we would normally be looking for one of the following pathways:

The BTEC Extended Diploma (QCF), or a combination of BTEC National Diploma (QCF), BTEC Subsidiary Diploma (QCF), or BTEC Certificate (QCF), that will give you three overall grades, the older BTEC Diploma (NQF) or a combination of BTEC Certificate (NQF) and BTEC Awards (NQF) that will give you 3 overall grades.

Both BTEC NQF and QCF National Qualifications are accepted as UCAS Tariff Points. In general, students are expected to meet the same tariff score requirements as A Level or AVCE students on a course by course basis. However, as these awards are graded at Pass, Merit, Distinction, some tariff points cannot be matched precisely, so you would need to refer to your offer conditions for the exact grades/tariff points you need to achieve for entry. Please note that BTEC offer a number of other options outside the “National” range, including the BTEC Specialist (QCF). These attract different tariff scores to other BTEC qualifications. You should refer to the latest UCAS tariff information for further details at www.ucas.com

Access to Higher Education Diploma
We welcome applicants with an Access to Higher Education Diploma. It is likely you will be asked for a range of Distinction and/or Merit grades in your Level 3 credits for many of our degree programmes.

Apprenticeships
We welcome applications from Advanced Apprentices. NVQ Level 3 will be considered alongside additional apprenticeship qualifications and previous qualifications such as GCSEs.

Applicants returning to study
We welcome applicants from those who wish to return to study after a period out of education and recognise that such applicants come from a variety of backgrounds. If you have any queries about your individual circumstances, you should contact our Admissions Team on 0161 344 8800 or email info@uco.oldham.ac.uk

UCO welcomes Key Skills qualifications and the UCAS Tariff Points for Key Skills will be counted towards the overall points score requirement. However, where Key Skills are not offered as a qualification, we will look for evidence of Key Skills in your personal statement and supporting reference.
